A Masterclass in Oil Portrait Painting with Josh Wright

This four-session Portrait Painting Masterclass introduces students to the traditional classical realism methods used to construct and complete a finished portrait in oils. Artists will learn a structured painting process inspired by the traditional atelier methods Josh Wright studied during five years of classical training at the Florence Academy of Art in Italy.

About the Course

In this 12 hour (4 x 3 hour classes) working from a carefully selected photographic reference, students will create a life-sized portrait on an 18 × 24 inch canvas. Beginning with the initial block-in and grisaille underpainting, the course will guide students through establishing accurate proportions and anatomy, understanding value relationships, mixing naturalistic flesh tones, developing form through light and shadow, and refining the painting toward a finished portrait.

The course is designed to give students not only a finished portrait, but a repeatable classical painting process they can continue applying to their own work.
