Description

Join award-winning photographer Alicia Bruce for an exciting workshop responding to our current exhibition Hill and Adamson’s The Fisherwomen and Men of the Firth of Forth.

The workshop will begin with a talk on portraiture and a tour of the exhibition where we’ll examine the content, sitters, composition, lighting and more in the portraits.

Alicia will then give a portrait demonstration before we go outdoors on location to make portraits of two Newhaven locals (Elaine and Eilidh) who will be wearing period costume of the Newhaven Fisherwomen.

 

Date: Friday 12th June

Time: 10am – 1pm

Duration: 3 hrs

Class Size: 8 people

 

What to Bring:

 

  • Any camera you are happy and confident to use including a DSLR, mirrorless, analogue camera, compact camera or smartphone.  

  • A tripod, if you have one.

  • Please charge your batteries in advance.

 

Note that this is not a 'How to use your camera' workshop so please only bring one that you know about already and that you know is working.

If you bring an analogue camera ensure you have loaded your film and are ready for the workshop including bringing a light metre is needed.

 

Alicia Bruce is an award-winning, working-class photographer, community collaborator, educator, and activist based in Scotland. Her photography sits between documentary and staged imagery focusing on communities, environments and human rights. Alicia Bruce is a member of the collective Women Photograph. Her first monograph ‘I Burn But I Am Not Consumed’ Daylight Books (USA), 2023 documents sixteen years of Donald Trump’s impact on a coastal Scottish community near where the artist grew up.

Alicia is based in Edinburgh, Scotland where she is a Teaching Fellow in Fine Art at Edinburgh College of Art, University of Edinburgh. Alicia also runs her own series of outdoor photography classes in Edinburgh.

Courses are subject to minimum enrolment. 

Cancellations can be made up to 7 days beforehand for full refund, after which we will not be able to provide a refund.

Participants of the class may have £5 discount on the Hill & Adamson book, or upon purchasing a print from the exhibition they will receive a free copy of the book.
