Event description

POWER BOTANY 15: Humpback Mountain Whale Watching

With Solly AND Ben

Ben Parangi, whale expert/researcher, all round community legend, and HUNK, joins Power Botany no. 15 as guest curator and co-host for HUMPBACK MOUNTAIN whale watching walk on Sunday July 20th at Cape Solander Kamay Botany Bay National Park.

Meet at 1 Captain Cook Drive in Kurnell at 9am. Message me if you'd like a lift from nearby public transport (I do have limited spots). We will be walking up to Cape Solander from Kurnell and then along the cliffs to find a spot to watch whales! The walk will be about 8km return with a slight incline at the beginning, but mostly flat with some uneven walking across the clifftops`.

Bring binoculars if you have them! Wear sturdy close toed shoes, please bring plenty of water (at least 2 L), and some lunch.

Expect low windswept heath, precipitous sandstone cliffs, glimpses of the majestic East coast cetacean migration, dolphins maybe, and new friends bonding over a shared sense of wonder at the magnificence of Australian ecology :)

We will be walking on Gweagal land. Please be respectful of these lands and waters and think about Indigenous peoples' ongoing care for and connection to this place. This spot, where the British landed in 1770, is a particularly significant place that represents the beginning of a systematic colonial project of genocide, dispossession and oppression against Australian Indigenous people. This is, and always will be, Aboriginal land.

Any other questions or accessibility needs that you would like to discuss, please message me on instagram @sollyfrank or email me at solly.frank@hotmail.com
