Practice 101: Experimental Practice Discussion

Join Arts Northern Rivers and Elevator ARI for a conversation with Performance Space (Gadigal Land, Sydney).

Designed for performers, interdisciplinary artists and visual artists with interests in performance, this discussion between Kate Britton (Artistic Director, Performance Space) and Jane Fuller (Executive Director, Arts Northern Rivers) will unpack the possibilities of experimental performance practice and queer programming.

The conversation will be centred in performance as practice, outside the parameters of typical theatrical presentations, focusing on multidisciplinary approaches both within and outside of the gallery walls. What is ‘performance’ in an experimental arts context, and how can it operate as a vehicle for new ways of expression across visual, sound, digital, installation and sculptural arts?

This is also an opportunity to hear about Performance Space’s program and opportunities for artists such as developments, residencies and Liveworks Festival.

Performance Space is the crucible for risk-taking artists. Emerging 40 years ago in response to artists’ articulated desire to explore and investigate new forms of art, Performance Space has consistently identified, nurtured and presented new directions in contemporary practice. They champion risk, experimentation, and new modes of creative expression. Performance Space continues to evolve and renew to meet the needs of the independent sector and explore new models for developing and presenting the most critical and important new work.

Guest Speakers –– Kate Britton & Jane Fuller

Kate Britton is the Artistic Director of Performance Space, based on Gadigal land. She has worked with experimental and interdisciplinary artists for more than a decade, producing and curating multi-form festivals, exhibitions, parties and public programs in spaces across Sydney. Her artistic interests lie in queer practice, durational and slippery forms, work that uses space in unusual ways, and antidisciplinary practice of all sorts.

Jane Fuller is the Executive Director for Arts Northern Rivers, with a lengthy career in experimental and queer performance. Jane has an early career relationship with Performance Space through as a collaborator and scenic designer for cLUB bENT, and worked with PSpace on their 21st anniversary as an installation piece taking over the entire space – many yonks ago! She has worked in experimental and experiential performance happenings with Belgian performance group Ontoerend Goed and Sydney’s Barbara Cleveland Projects (previously Brown Council) with Adelaide Fringe as Creative Director, and Director of contemporary arts company Vitalstatistix.

This is a free event, tickets are limited.

Venue

This event is hosted at Elevator ARI, Lismore. Free parking is available at Harold Fredericks Carpark (across the road).

Accessibility

Elevator ARI endeavours to be as accessible as possible and is *almost* a wheelchair accessible venue. This event will take place on the ground floor however, patrons using a wheelchair are encouraged to connect ahead of the event about the venue. An accessible bathroom is available.
