PRACTICE 101: Public Art

Join Arts Northern Rivers for a professional development workshop for creatives. Facilitated by Deborah McCormick (NZ), this session positions public art as an essential building block for a thriving community.

Via a 2.5hour interactive workshop, participants will explore how artists responded after the earthquakes in Ōtautahi Christchurch during the cities rebuild. The workshop will focus on opening-up the process of development to encourage artists to be active agents, working collaboratively and collectively with communities, arts organisations, people, and places to create stimulating, rigorous, sophisticated, and generous public artworks. Equipping you with the skills, information and resources required to take leading roles in developing public art projects, Deborah will workshop ‘how to develop and strengthen your proposal when responding to a brief’.

Join Deborah to learn about taking your art into context outside of galley spaces, where people can get exposure to your ideas; exploring new modes of what public art looks like in the future for different publics.

About the Facilitator:

Deborah McCormick believes that public art is the keystone to a vibrant, thriving city. With 25 years’ experience bringing art into public spaces, Deborah is an industry leader and visionary with expertise in public and private partnership models, project delivery, arts management, public arts policy, strategic business planning and public and international relations.

Well-known for her work creating and moulding SCAPE Public Art into a respected and recognisable organisation on the international stage, Deborah is passionate about taking art into context outside of gallery spaces, where people can get exposure to public art. Deborah brings her considerable experience in Aotearoa’s arts and cultural landscape to Deborah McCormick Consulting (DMC) Limited: a new company formed working with Urban Art Projects (UAP) to bring together a range of opportunities and partnerships in New Zealand’s public art sector.
