Practice analytics explores how data in healthcare can be leveraged to support practitioners in their professional learning and development. By selecting, scaffolding, and sharing appropriate data with practitioners, key stakeholders are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and practical tools required to unlock data-driven insights that would otherwise be unseen.

Building on the success of previous summits, the 2024 event brings together another innovating group of keynote speakers, PhD candidates, industry thought leaders, and academics. For the first time, the summit will have themed towards the integration of AI within practice analytics.

The summit will feature keynote presentations from Associate Professor Martin Pusic (Harvard Medical School) and Dr Simon Kos (Microsoft ANZ).

Associate Professor Martin Pusic

Dr. Pusic is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Emergency Medicine in the Harvard Medical School, a practicing Pediatric Emergency Medicine physician at the Boston Children’s Hospital, and Scholar in Residence at the Brigham Education Institute.

He recently became Director of the Research Education Foundation at the American Board of Medical Specialties where he encourages scholarly approaches to Certification of Medical Expertise. He is a leading scholar in the field of medical expertise with his research focusing on the collection and analysis of learning analytic data to nurture and certify expertise development across healthcare specialties.

Dr Simon Kos

Dr. Simon Kos is an internationally recognized leader in digital health, working in senior executive roles for over twenty years. He is a registered medical practitioner who has practiced critical care medicine in Australia. He holds an MBBS from UNSW, an MBA from AGSM and is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Digital Health (FAIDH).

Significant past roles include global chief medical officer of Microsoft based in Seattle, CEO of Next Practice, Physician Executive with Cerner, and the co-chair of the Global Commission to end the Diagnostic Odyssey for children with a Rare Disease.

He is currently the Chief Medical Officer at Microsoft ANZ, a non-executive director at Innowell, a mentor in both NHS and Australia’s Clinical Entrepreneur Programs, a casual lecturer at UNSW School of Medicine, and an advisor/investor in digital health start-ups.

Harvey Koh | Constellation of Models for Risk Adjustment of Quality Indicators for Accurate Benchmarking

This presentation focuses on using machine learning models to risk adjust and predict patient outcomes to provide accurate audit and feedback to healthcare professionals in Urology.

Jimmie Yan | Integrating Generative AI Agents into Practice Analytics to Enhance Reflective Practices in Medical Education and Continuing Professional Development

This presentation explores the potential of Generative AI (GenAI) agents to enhance the comprehension of complex data visualisations within practice analytics, a critical competency in both medical education and continuing professional development for healthcare professionals. Despite existing methods like data storytelling, many medical students, graduates, and practising professionals find this skill challenging. We will discuss how GenAI agents, particularly those that use proactive strategies with scaffolding questions, can provide scalable support and promote deeper understanding. By focusing on their role in improving reflective practices, the presentation highlights the promising application of GenAI agents in educational and professional development settings, offering insights into how they can foster sustained learning outcomes and advance data literacy across the healthcare field.

Nina Roxburgh | The missing link: The role of patient-reported data in shaping health experiences and outcomes

Health care is constantly evolving, with most professionals committed to improving services and outcomes. Yet, one critical piece often overlooked in this journey is data from the patients themselves—a missed opportunity that can have far-reaching consequences. In this presentation, I delve into two high-profile cases: the egg retrieval scandal at Yale IVF Clinic and the cochlear implant 'bungle' Adelaide Women and Children’s Hospital. Both revealed the devastating impact of sidelining patients' voices, leading to serious ethical concerns and harm to individuals and their communities.

I explore how these situations might have unfolded differently if patient-reported data had been integrated into routine decision-making and practice reflection. Could lives and experiences have been improved with the inclusion of this vital perspective? Lastly, I raise some of the ethical complexities of collecting and using such data, sharing insights from healthcare professionals on how they perceive patient reports in shaping practice and policy.

Kavisha Shah | Aligning Standards and Performance: Key Themes from a Health Policy Review

This presentation will examine key ethical values and legal principles guiding implementation of practice analytics in Australia. This presentation covers findings from a comprehensive policy review of professional standards, incident and complaint management policies and quality improvement initiatives released by health services, professional associations, and government agencies responsible for the delivery of practice analytics.

Malhar Soni | Surgical Robotic Learning Loops: Near Realtime Audits

Robotic surgery is becoming ubiquitous but is not part of formal surgical training, audit or ongoing structured professional development. This talk outlines the current landscape with auditing robot assisted prostatectomies and proposes a method for automatically capturing structured data for auditing.
