PRACTICE AND PLAY

  • Share your practice: provide a platform for artists to showcase their unique styles and methodologies.
  • Foster creativity: encourage experimentation and innovation within their own communities.
  • Build connections: strengthen the local dance network by engaging with fellow dance artists and collaborators.
  • Enhance visibility: increase the visibility of independent artists and their work within the Northern Rivers region.
  • Respond to sector needs: addresses the needs identified in the Dance Sector Uplift report.


PRACTICE AND PLAY #3 with Jade Dewi Tyas Tunggal and Janessa Dufty aims to bring together intercultural performance makers from various creative disciplines, including dance, theatre, design, music (both digital and analogue mediums). The focus is on building individual and collective connections, as we delve into our personal artistic processes and discover new possibilities for future experimental performance collaborations.

What to expect:

- Half day immersed in the dance studio.

- Half day exploring the natural beauty of Angourie Beach and Yuraygir National Park, with activities shaped by the wind and tides.

- Embodied dance practices centred on connection, discovery and play.

- Improvisation and Video Dance sessions.

- A shared lunch featuring yummy traditional Filipino and Indonesian cuisine.


What to Bring:

- Comfortable clothing for movement and dance

- Sun protection (hat, sunscreen, etc.)

- Swimsuit and towel

- Journal and writing/drawing materials

- Water bottle and snacks.

BIOGRAPHIES

Jade Dewi Tyas Tunggal is a Javanese Australian director, choreographer, performance-maker, and certified BMC somatic movement educator. Her acclaimed solo performances have been showcased in Australia via Kultour and Performing Lines. Jade collaborates nationally and internationally across dance, theatre, film, visual arts, and festivals, driven by her passion for interdisciplinary and intercultural work gained through extensive experiences in Australia, North America, Europe, and Asia.

Jade launched and facilitates Angourie Dance, with Janessa Dufty, offering contemporary dance workshops for Northern Rivers youth. She also designs online and in-person workshops for Outback Theatre for Young People and Bourke Walgett School of Distance Education. Jade co-leads inclusive First Nations and disability cultural workshops with Sprung Dance Theatre, shares insights in podcasts and publications, and mentors emerging artists. With NORPA her choreography for Djurra (2017), direction of Flow (2023), and movement director and performer roles in Wildskin (2024) showcase her contributions. Arts Northern Rivers' Dance Sector Uplift report 2023 recognised her as a key artist in the region.

In 2024, Jade received the Critical Path Asia Australia Fellowship for her performance work Ngayomi/Shelter with Ria Soemardjo, which promoted discussions with Art Gallery NSW, a ReadyMade residency, and performances at Bundanon Art Museum and Studio107. She also joined the Marrugeku Choreographic Labs, researching Dramaturgy on contested land in Broome and Sydney. Currently, she's co-authoring with Kirk Page a dance theatre piece titled, Smoke, recently pitching it at the Arts on Tour Salon and securing support from BlakDance, highlighting her influence in the arts community. Jade was one of the 11 selected artists to participate in the PH(R)ASE//:1 - 'Pitch Lab' residency.

Janessa Dufty is a passionate mother of two, proud to be back in her hometown of Yamba on Yaegl Country, where she is nurturing her family and her creative spirit. Known for her fiercely open presence and vibrant energy on and off stage, Janessa captivates audiences with her dynamic performances. An acclaimed creative force, she continually evolves her career, bringing a deep understanding of both theatre and film.

Janessa has collaborated with some of the most renowned names in the industry, including Sydney Dance Company’s Artistic Director Rafael Bonachela, Black Grace’s Neil Ieremia, Emanuel Gat, William Forsythe Associates, Aszure Barton, Kenneth Knarstrom, Antonios Foniadakis, Alexander Ekman, Cheng Tsung-lung, Jacopo Godani, Melanie Lane, Antony Hamilton, Gabrielle Nankivell, Lee Serles, Larissa McGowan, Daniel Riley, Kirk Page, Jade Dewi Tyas Tunggal, Daniel Belton, and Taika Waititi.

Her brilliant work TELOPEA premiered at Carriageworks during Sydney Dance Company’s New Breed 2018 season. Janessa celebrates her Filipina and Australian heritage daily and thrives on creating extraordinary art and sharing it with the world. She was one of the 11 artists selected to participate in the PH(R)ASE//:1 - 'Pitch Lab' residency.
