Pray for Portugal
Event description
Join us along with our Partners in Prayer as we hear about and pray for the gospel work in Portugal.
Portugal is one of the world’s oldest countries, having maintained its continental borders since 1143. In 1974, Portugal became a democratic republic after many years of fascist dictatorship and tight Roman Catholic control. This paved the way for Portugal to become the modern secular state it is today.
“According to the Portugese Evangelical Alliance, churches in urban areas average around 50 people. In rural areas, this shrinks to 20. Evangelicals (7 in 10) also congregate in one of three districts, Lisbon, Porto and Setúbal.”
Many ECM missionaries past and present, such as Alex Kowalenko, have worked closely with the Portuguese Bible
Institute, an interdenominational Bible college, to train and equip nationals for the work of church planting,
pastoral ministry, evangelism and discipleship. Sam and Emily Loa-Ferreira are currently in Australia preparing to
serve in Portugal.
