    Event description

The workshop is for the curious person who's heard about fermenting & preserving, but doesn't know where to start. It's to encourage people with basic food skills to have a go at putting some of the surplus produce away for use in future meals.

Rolling with the seasons, develop a few skills to use the abundant produce, put some away for later and knowing how to use up your food scraps certainly comes in handy.

    WHAT YOU’LL LEARN

Working with only basic kitchen tools, the stove and fridge learn a few simple techniques that will save you dollars, add colour, flavour and nutrition to your meals. Nothing super fancy pants, just some good old fashioned skills to keep you eating decadently all year round – even if you thought there was only the bare bones of a meal on the loose.

    WHAT YOU’LL GET

In the 1 & 1/2 hour workshop we’ll discuss several preserving and fermenting techniques of:

    - sauerkraut
    - fridge pickles
    - dip
    - vegetable stock -chutney

An edible discussion will top off our time together as we graze on our newfound knowledge and then take home your ferments!

    WHAT TO BRING

People should bring some glass jars, nice & clean. Wide mouthed jars are better for working with. Well fitted lids with no dent or rust spots is essential.

    GETTING HERE

We recommend using public transport as parking can be limited on Mallet Street and nearby.

    1. Bus: Routes 413, 480, 438X, 461X, 440
    2. Train: Nearest stop is Newtown station

    SUITABLE FOR

    • All ages
    • Beginner to intermediate fermenters

Sarah is the founder and head gardener of Popes Produce. She comes from a background of organic food retail, visual arts and hospitality these skills are readily blended to encourage people to enjoy fresh happy food.

At its core, Popes Produce is a small urban market garden tucked away in a family backyard demonstrating (very) small scale food production.
