Pride Smash (Mega Social Badminton)
Event description
Are you ready to experience the most exciting and most unique badminton event of the year? An official event of the Sydney Mardi Gras Festival, Pride Smash is set to become Sydney’s largest Badminton Social affair for the LGBTQ+ community and its allies.
Supported by NBC Badminton and the three major Sydney LGBTIQ badminton clubs - Sydney Shuttles, Sydney Hot Shots and Shuttle Swingers, this first of a kind event will see us celebrate the inclusivity, diversity and power of our LGBTQ badminton community, while introducing the sport to our fellow queer folk. An affair that will go beyond the boundaries of a regular badminton gathering.
Never before have all three (3) LGBTQ groups joined forces to host an event that celebrates our LGBTQ badminton community.
This event is not your usual run of the mill badminton social.
WHAT TO EXPECT?
Firstly, we've got the whole NBC badminton complex (yep, all the courts) exclusively for this one night. Just for the LGBTQ badminton community and their allies to play socially with new and old friends. Social games for the first couple of hours will be organised according to your level, giving you the opportunity to hit up new (and possibly old) players.
Beginners Coaching (7:00 - 8:00pm)
For those who are brand new to badminton, the amazing Claudia Lam will be showing new badminton enthusiasts how to swing their way around the badminton courts. Claudia is a former Australian National Junior Representative, had a career high women's singles ranking of #5 in Australia, and #9 in women's doubles. She currently coaches in her spare time and will be on hand to play social with everyone once she's done with coaching duties. Book your spot by texting 0415 123 111. The mini group coaching sessions will run from 7:00 - 7:30pm and 7:30 - 8:00pm depending on numbers.
Resident Court DJ
8:00pm - DJ Ev Koon will be spinning the decks to get the party going.
9:00pm - Special Guest Appearance by Miss Joanna Marie
PLUS - Lucky Door Prizes, Guest Player appearances and much more!
With energy pulsing DJ tunes, special guests, Australia’s largest rainbow shuttlecock, guest players and a pumping party-like atmosphere, Pride Smash will unite individuals from the LGBTQ+ communities through an on-court sweat fest like no other.
Whether you're a seasoned player or a beginner, everyone is welcome to join. Social games for the first couple of hours will be organised in a way that allows players to play with similar level or experience, while still being inclusive for all.
Pride Smash is about creating opportunities for queer folks to come together in a safe, active and inclusive environment. It's an event designed to create new memories, laughable moments and thrilling matches.
