Event description

Gather once, gather all, for the third year of the Youth Pride Ball hosted out of Cockburn Youth Centre! This free event is a chance for young people (15-24) to come together and celebrate.

This year our theme is Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead). Feathers, flowers, colour, music!

We have a fantastic evening planned for you with:

  • DJ Manic, live in the hall!
  • Photo booth
  • Face painting
  • Stalls from LGBTQIA+ organisations
  • Chill out room
  • La Ofrenda
  • Free drinks and burrito bowls (with vegan/gluten-free options)

Fabulous Feud

This year we will be premiering a new event, Fabulous Feud!

Compete in one of three teams, guessing the top answers to some spicy, room-splitting questions as answered by you, the attendees!

Answered how you say? Upon registering your ticket, you will be given the change to answer a few quick questions (should only take a minute or two). Your answer will be included in the answer poll and be used in the Fabulous Feud!

What will play and who will win? We can't wait to find out.

La Ofrenda (The Offering)

In line with our Día de Muertos theme, there will be a small, public ofrenda set up.

Attendees are invited to bring and place photos of folks they wish to remember. A beloved advocate, a friend, a family member, a pet. Anyone who has and holds a lot of meaning for who you are right now.

Invite them to be remembered on this night.

The Chill Out Space

We will be setting aside a quiet space where you can unwind and deflate.

Speak to the staff member at the desk and to be let in and your will be able to soak in the quiet through our acoustically insulated studio.

Why Día de Muertos?

Youth Diversity Inc. (YDI), our LGBTIQA+ youth group is working with us on the planning for the event and they chose the theme of Día de Muertos. Día de Muertos is a holiday celebrated throughout Mexico and several other countries in Central and South America as a way to remember and honour friends and family who have passed away.

Día de Muertos (Spanish for Day of the Dead) is probably the most universally well known Mexican holidays. It's comes from the mixture of an Aztec festival  dedicated to Mictecacihuatl the goddess of death, with some Catholic and contemporary Mexican influence. Mexicans have transformed it into a truly unique holiday that they honour every year.

The traditions surrounding Day of the Dead are rich with cultural influence and true to Mexican style they don’t lack colour and substance. It's that vibrancy and colour that we love so much about it, as the LGBTIQ+ community is just as vibrant, beautiful and full of diversity! Our YDI found many parallels with themselves and the wider LGBTIQA+ community and we've worked with our young people so that this event is a culturally respectful, vibrant and fun event.
