Primal Bloom

A Beltane Celebration of Life

Sunday 1 November 2026 | 3–5:30 pm
25 Mile · Lake Wakatipu

To welcome the wildness that lives within us is to allow the throb of the Earth to pulsate in our bones, to river through our blood, and the gentle breeze to kiss our skin in delight.

Beltane is the seasonal celebration of fertility, sensuality, desire and the flourishing of life force. Here in the Southern Hemisphere, we celebrate this threshold around October 31st, halfway between the Spring Equinox and Summer Solstice.

Yes, when most of us are celebrating Halloween!

But if you hadn't noticed, there ain't no pumpkins sprouting from the earth at this time of year in Aotearoa!

Halloween has its roots in the Northern Hemisphere's autumn traditions, a time associated with honouring our ancestors, the dead and the mysteries of the unseen. It was never really about how much candy you could consume. Ahhh, you have to love corporate marketing and consumerism and the ways they shape our realities!

Meanwhile, here in Aotearoa, the whenua is telling an entirely different story.

The Earth is alive with the impulse to blossom, to create, to reach towards life.

The warmth of the sun penetrates deeper into the soil, awakening seeds that have lain dormant through winter. Flowers burst into bloom, the land becomes lush with new growth, and everywhere life is thrusting forth, reaching towards the light.

This is the season of eros.

The Earth opens herself to the sun's embrace, overflowing with fecundity, arousing our senses with vibrant colour, intoxicating scent and the voluptuous abundance of life.

For our pagan ancestors, Beltane was a time of fire, fertility and celebration. Great bonfires were lit to welcome the coming warmth, with people and livestock passing between the flames in rituals of blessing and protection. The flowering of the land was celebrated through feasting, dancing and the gathering of community, honouring the generative forces that sustain all life.

Beltane invites us to remember that these same forces of creation, desire and renewal are alive within us.

Primal Bloom is an invitation to enter into intimate relationship with the living world through the doorway of the body.

Gathering in the forest beside Lake Wakatipu, we will open with a cacao ceremony, taking time to arrive, awaken our senses and honour our relationship with the living Earth.

From here, we will journey into somatic dance, music and ritual, allowing the rhythms of the Earth to move through us.

What becomes possible when we remember that we are not separate from nature, but an expression of her?

When we allow ourselves to be moved by the same intelligence that unfurls the fern, opens the flower and draws the roots deep into the soil?

Together, we will honour the fertility of life in all its forms, celebrating the beauty, sensuality and wild creative potential of being alive.

Come as you are. Come to feel. Come to remember your belonging.
