The cyanotype process is the original ‘blueprint’. The process is one of the oldest printmaking/photography techniques introduced by John Herschel in 1842 and popularised by botanist and photographer Anna Atkins in 1843. It's a versatile technique that can be used on a variety of materials including paper, fabric, glass, ceramic and many more.

In this workshop, the artist will run you through the basic steps of the process, teaching and guiding participants on how to produce their own unique cyanotype prints. We will go on a walk to collect botanic materials around the White’s Creek Reserve which can be used to create unique prints! The artist will also provide basic materials such as transparency sheets and film negatives which can be used in the process. Participants are encouraged to bring along any materials they may wish to use. We will then explore how to create the prints on paper or fabric as patches to repair/embellish clothing. You'll head home with your very own cyanotype masterpiece!

What to bring - basic materials will be provided, if you would like to bring any additional materials see below for suggestions:

Paper: preferably 100% cotton and 200gsm+ (Hahnemuhle or watercolour paper both work well) but any paper that can be submerged in water and avoid pilling will work well.
Images/materials: anything you would like to use to make an image. This can include but is not limited to: pressed flowers, leaves, film negatives, tracing paper, transparencies, glassware, etc.

This workshop is open to adults and families, if you bring along your child please make sure they are supervised at all times. The artist takes no responsibility for the supervision of children. Cyanotype chemicals can be a mild skin irritant, gloves will be available on the day for use but please exercise caution. This activity may not be suitable for children under 8yrs. This workshop is weather dependant, in the case of wet weather participants will be notified and the workshop will be rescheduled.
