Production and Sound Design Wānanga with Keepsakes and Akcept
Event description
AKCEPT:
Alex (Ngāti Porou/Tūhoe) is an Ōtautahi based producer and DJ inspired by the sparse soundscapes of techno, the DIY sampling culture of hip-hop, and the low frequency rhythms and sonic manipulations of dub.
Alex will demonstrate the process and skills involved in producing a track, showing how an idea evolves into a finished piece of music. Along the way, he will share some of the concepts and whakaaro that inspire and guide his creative approach to production.
KEEPSAKES:
James is a Techno producer primarily known for his output under his 'Keepsakes' moniker, and has featured his music on international labels including Turbo Recordings, Boys Noize Records, Perc Trax, and KAOS/OAKS. He focuses on productions that are effective on the dance-floor while leaning on his own sound design derived from field recordings, online sample collection, and analogue and digital synthesisers.
His demonstration will primarily focus on the technique of granular sampling. He will show how he uses this to repurpose a variety of sound sources and samples in his music to create drums and percussion, experimental textures, and unique melodies and hooks.
