Session 2 – Gender positive – Gender Impact Assessment

Gender Positive will guide participants through the process of undertaking a gender impact assessment. It will help participants apply a gender lens to geographic place naming and public art and design recommendations that will make a positive gender impact. Sector leaders will share their stories of progress.

Leadership is needed to achieve the 70% target of all new commemorative naming to honour women in Victoria as established in Our Equal State, Victoria’s Gender Equality Strategy and Action Plan 2023-27, so too is ACTION.

In 2020 the Victorian Government introduced the Gender Equality Act and from 2021 all new or reviewed policies, programs and services require a Gender Impact Assessment(GIA). Following on from this in 2022 the Naming of Places in Victoria Rules introduced a gender equality principle and Gender Equity Victoria (GEN VIC) and Geographic Names Victoria partnered to survey local government to understand important indicators around achieving equality in public place naming and public art. We established that the approximate gap is 1 out of 10 commemorative names in Victoria honour women and we also established that only 3 of the 79 LGAs had completed a GIA on place naming and/or public art. It’s fair to say there is a GIA gap.
