Following on from the Shine a light on Professional Supervision forums held in June, we are continuing our spotlight on Supervision, through deeper dive practice workshops.

This professional supervision program uses a flexible, blended delivery mode to enable people to develop their knowledge and practice over time.

Professional supervision is a professional activity that works to sustain, develop and support staff and is integral to delivering better outcomes for clients. Professional supervision needs to be a culturally grounded, co-created process developed through an ongoing, professional and collaborative conversation between the supervisor and the supervisee.

It comprises two online modules; that participants work through in their own time and is supported by three online practice workshops. The live workshops will be recorded, so that participants can view them at a time convenient, if they are unable to join the live workshop.

In this program professional supervision is explored through two major components:

A model of professional supervision that addresses how supervision can be optimally constructed and performed
A model for practice framework development to enable the supervisee/supervisor to describe what they do in the execution of their professional duties as well as the theories that inform those practices.

This supervision framework occurs in a broader system known as Practice Five®

We expect that participants will need to allocate approximately 2 hours per week over 10 weeks to successfully engage in the program which includes presentations, worksheets, group conversations, reflective activities, videos and case studies.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion you will be able to:

identify strategies that build an effective professional supervision relationship
implement a framework for supervision sessions over time
recognise the linkage between professional supervision, successful practitioners, client outcomes and organisational sustainability
use the critical skill of containment
understand and have confidence to manage ethical and challenging professional issues that can arise in supervision
have awareness of and be able to manage diversity issues in supervision
have the skills to evaluate performance and give effective feedback in supervision
understand the unconscious processes in the context of supervision
implement other formats for supervision: peer, group or virtual;
delineate supervision and line management and implement supervision within an organisational context.

About the facilitators

This program was developed by Dr Paul Gibney and Ken Dagley of Practice Five. The online workshops will be presented by Dr Paul Gibney.

Dr Paul Gibney

Dr Paul Gibney is a social worker, psychotherapist, corporate trainer and family therapist and is in private practice. Paul works closely with government departments and NGO’s in the areas of child protection, trauma, attachment theory and conducts complex case clinics. His professional supervision model has been delivered across the state since 2013. Through his keynote addresses, lectures and presentations, Paul is considered one of the most dynamic, engaging and respected speakers. His 2003 text, ‘The Pragmatics of Therapeutic Practice’ is a classic text and is used in several Master of Counselling Courses. He is the author of over 30 academic papers.

Ken Dagley

Ken Dagley has a 30 year management consulting, HR leadership and academic career that has extended across Australia and internationally. His consulting expertise is in the area of organisation change, leadership and management development, instructional design and strategic human resources. He has worked for the Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services as the Director of Workforce Capability. His academic career covers nearly 20 years with the Australian Graduate School of Management’s EMBA program and has also taught executive programs at RMIT University focussing of Service Leadership.
