Professor Mark Deuze will give a public lecture on generative AI in the media industries as part of a collaboration between the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) public showcase FASStival 2023 and the Journalism Education Research Association of Australia (JERAA) 2023 conference.

Professor Deuze will discuss discoveries from his Life in Media project about the (changing) nature of creativity in media across journalism, advertising, film, games, and music and the role of (generative) AI in creative/media work. He has also just published his new book Life in Media: A Global Introduction to Media Studies with The MIT Press (in July 2023).

His public lecture will be followed by a Q&A.

About Professor Mark Deuze

Professor Mark Deuze is Professor of Media Studies at the University of Amsterdam’s (UvA) Faculty of Humanities and a Visiting Professor in Media in FASS at UTS. He has researched media and journalism for more than two decades focusing on the evolving relationship between media, technology and creativity. From 2004 to 2013 he worked at Indiana University’s Department of Telecommunications in Bloomington, United States.

Publications of his work include over one hundred papers in academic journals and eleven books, including “Life in Media” (2023), “Happiness in Journalism” (co-edited, out in November 2023), “McQuail’s Media and Mass Communication Theory” (7th edition published by Sage in May 2020), and “Making Media” (co-edited, published January 2019 by Amsterdam University Press). His publications have been translated in Chinese, Czech, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Greek, and Hungarian.

Professor Deuze has held honorary appointments at various universities in the United Kingdom, Germany, Russia, and Australia. His work has been supported by numerous international individual and collaborative grants and fellowships, including Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions of the European Commission, Discovery grants of the Australia Research Council, and a Fulbright Fellowship at the University of Southern California in the United States.

He is also the bass player and singer of Skinflower.
