Join Yana, Laura and Lynne for a relaxed evening of thoughtful conversation to explore how we can protect the things that matter most to us later in life, and when we die.
Kura Tāwhiti Foundation will host a panel discussion with:
Yana Gilbuena-Babu - an Earth-Centred End-of- Life, Companion Animal & Eco-grief Diasporic Doula
Laura Daly - Senior Associate from D'arcy Thomson Law
Lynne Umbers - Cheif Executive of the Kura Tāwhiti Foundation
This event was initially hosted in Christchurch City as part of Dying Matters Week, connecting people across Aotearoa to start conversations in a safe space, learn from local experts and seek support to plan for later life and end-of-life and to navigate grief and loss.
The content has been adapted specifically for a West Melton audience. There will be time after the presentations to ask questions and speak to each team individually about your own needs.
Contact Polly on 021829255 or pollyanne.pena@kuratawhiticcf.org.nz for more information or if you have specific questions for our panelists.

Yana Gilbuena-Babu - Earth-Centred End-of- Life, Companion Animal, & Eco-grief Diasporic Doula Services
Kia Ora! I’m Yana. I’ve spent my career at the intersection of deep human connection, the natural world, and unfiltered truth – we all have an expiration date. As an earth-centred end-of-life, companion animal, and eco-grief doula, I help people and their pets navigate the final transition with grounded, compassionate care. My practice is built on the bones of my past lives: as a former therapist who knows how to sit with the messy, uncomfortable realities of loss; as a zero-waste chef who understands that everything—including us—must eventually return to the soil to nourish the next season; and as a fierce sustainability advocate fighting for low-impact, regenerative systems. I believe dying is a compassionate, community event, where everyone collaborates on providing client-focused care. Whether we’re sitting at the kitchen table mapping out your earth-centred advance directives, holding a slow, sensory-rich vigil for your aging dog, or composting the heavy, quiet weight of climate anxiety, I’m here to help you, and your other support systems, reclaim a profound, organic, and beautifully unhurried exit, together.
