Structures Behind the Elusiveness: Exploring the mechanism of landscape design processes through a reflective practice in China.

Eileen’s research explores how, in practice, designers usually reflect retrospectively, but cognitive biases make such recollections inaccurate. Therefore, analysing the interactions and consequences in the design process is fundamental to understanding how design evolves and to identifying the critical elements of creativity.

“Design activities often appear mysterious, as they are not easily discernible or explainable to external observers. The complexity of design contexts and the interplay among issues, ideas, and actions further obscure straightforward understanding. Yet the rational aspect of design can be studied through structured approaches.”

Through reflection on her own landscape design practice in China, and with insights gained from protocol analysis and Linkography, she has developed a structured reflective diagramming method to unpack creative design processes and analyse mechanisms behind inconspicuous activities.
