PRS Australia PhD Examination - Ying-Lan Dann (School of Architecture and Urban Design - RMIT University)
Event description
Join us for the PhD examination of School of Architecture and Urban Design candidate, Ying-Lan Dann.
2pm - 4pm, Tuesday 21 October.
Drawing with the World Drawing Itself
Ying-Lan’s research experiments with drawing approaches she has explored in her art and architecture over twenty-five years to further the possibilities of drawing as her central mode of research and practice.
Her approaches enable her to extend and enact drawing at a one-to-one scale with The World—including weather, water, ground, infrastructures, and stories, drawing through, above and below ground.
These approaches lead her drawing practice beyond acts of mark-making and reveal drawing itself as a catalyst for critical spatial, social, and environmental enquiry.
Drawing with such conditions leads the research to the further proposition—designing with—moving the practice toward processes that are improvisational, lightweight, low- cost, and have low-embodied energy.
These directions redirect her work as an architect from drawing and designing architecture, to drawing and designing with conditions that produce and subtend architecture from below, beside, above, around, and through.
Please note no entry will be permitted after commencement of this examination. Please aim to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the scheduled start time.
