Join us for a Screening and Panel Discussion of the documentary, "Psychedelia: The History and Science of Mystical Experience" at Plaza Atlanta Theater in Atlanta, Georgia followed by a discussion with the filmmaker and a panel of experts. 

The film takes viewers on a journey through the origins and resurgence of psychedelic research, which has been declared a breakthrough therapy for treatment-resistant depression by the FDA. It features leading experts in the field, and explores how spiritual experiences are transforming mental health.

All ticket sales will go directly towards supporting the filmmaker, and all platform fees collected by Humanitix go to supporting children's charities.

ABOUT THE PANELISTS

Pat Murphy is a documentary filmmaker and professional film editor. His work includes programs for PBS, American Masters, and People magazine. His latest editing project is the Emmy-nominated Showtime documentary, “The One and Only Dick Gregory,” about the legendary comedian and activist Dick Gregory. Pat started making “Psychedelia” in 2011, upon learning about the NYU Psilocybin Cancer Anxiety Study. He produced, financed, and distributed the film completely independently. Aside from filmmaking, he is an enthusiast for the outdoors, American history, and roots music.

Dr. Boadie Dunlop is Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Emory University in Atlanta, where he holds the positions of Director of the Mood and Anxiety Disorders Program, Director of the Adult Psychiatry Outpatient Programs, and Medical Director of the Emory Healthcare Veterans Program.  He graduated from Mayo Medical School in 1997, completed his residency in Psychiatry at Emory in 2001, followed by a fellowship in Clinical Neuroscience in 2004 and a Masters of Science in Clinical Research in 2012. He is now in his 25th year at Emory. His clinical research program is focused on the neurobiology, psychopharmacology, and personalized treatment of major depression, bipolar disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder, including psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy using psilocybin and MDMA.  He has served as an investigator for more than 70 clinical studies of medication and psychotherapy treatments for these disorders. Dr. Dunlop has authored 14 book chapters and over 120 research papers in psychiatry and maintains an active role in the education of psychiatry residents and provision of clinical care.

Bill Hitchens is a Republican member of the Georgia House of Representatives from the 161st District, serving since 2012. Bill is a graduate of Georgia Southern College and the 130th Session of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia. Prior to his election to the Georgia House of Representatives, he served 47 years in the military and state law enforcement. Bill is a proud Marine Corps Vietnam Veteran, worked for the Georgia State Patrol for 28 years, and was the former Director of Georgia Homeland Security. After retiring from the GSP, Bill worked three years with the Governor’s Criminal Justice Coordinating Council as a law enforcement consultant, where his primary responsibility was working with the 30 federally funded multi-jurisdictional drug task forces in Georgia. Bill’s most recent committee assignments include House Appropriations, Defense and Veterans Affairs, House Economic Development and Tourism, Public Safety and Homeland Security, House Rules, and House Transportation. Bill is currently the lead sponsor for legislation to provide funding for Emory University, which would be led by Dr. Boadie Dunlop, to conduct a study using psilocybin to treat Veterans suffering from PTSD. Bill has been married to his wife, Norma, a Georgia Department of Industry, Trade and Tourism retiree, since August 31, 1968. They have four children and ten grandchildren.

Ethan Whitfield’s military career in the Army spanned over 23 years of service in the following units: 1st Ranger battalion 75th Ranger regiment, 1st Special Forces Group, and U.S. Army Special Operations Command. Whitfield is the recipient of the Silver Star, two Bronze Stars, and the Purple Heart. While serving in the U.S. Army, Ethan held numerous leadership positions as a Special Forces Team Sergeant, Special Operations Medical Sergeant, and Special Projects Operations Manager. Ethan’s final military assignment was serving as the Senior Military Instructor for the University of Georgia, where he reshaped the Cadet leadership training to prepare the next generation of U.S. Officers for the challenges faced in Combat. After 16 Combat deployments to locations such as Bosnia, Philippines, Niger, Iraq, and Afghanistan, Ethan retired from the military in 2019. In 2012, Whitfield co-founded the first brick and mortar whole-body Cryotherapy studio in the US in Atlanta, Icebox Cryotherapy. Whitfield built and implemented all facets of the business operations and processes from inception to sustainment. In 2016 Icebox Cryotherapy was officially offered as a franchise, opening its first franchise location in 2017. After suffering PTSD from his combat experience, and witnessing a friend’s loss to suicide in 2017, Ethan became an advocate for mental health among veterans. With the help of the nonprofit organization VETS, Ethan was able to travel to Mexico to participate in psilocybin treatment. He’s since become an advocate for the use of psilocybin among veterans, and testified at the House Defense and Veterans Affairs Committee last August.
