Uncovering the lives of Hector's Dolphins
In this presentation, Cawthron marine ecologist Dr Deanna Clement will share the details of a study she co-led that trialled the use of DTAGs (digital acoustic recording tags), temporarily fitted to Hector’s dolphins in Te Koko-o-Kupe / Cloudy Bay, Marlborough. Funded by Fisheries New Zealand and supported by DOC, the study assessed the suitability of DTAGs as a tool for monitoring and protecting dolphins but also revealed some interesting new learnings about their underwater habits.

Presenter Bio
Deanna is the team leader in Marine Mammal Ecology at the Cawthron Institute. She studied biology and marine ecology in the United States before moving to New Zealand to do her PhD at the University of Otago on Hector’s dolphins. She’s now been studying Hector’s / Maui dolphins around the country for over 24 years. At Cawthron, Deanna works on a variety of projects ranging from impact assessments and the design of resource consent monitoring studies to using underwater acoustic sound to study marine species.

A short Q&A session will follow Deanna's presentation. The event will formally conclude at 6.30pm but guests are invited to remain for informal networking over tea/coffee afterwards if they wish.
