Performance & Buffet Dinner

Saturday, October 18 | 5:30 PM – 10:00 PM
Location: Centre for Newcomers
Tickets: $85.00 per person

Join us for a lively Saturday evening cèilidh – an unforgettable night of puppetry, film, food, and connection! A ceilidh (pronounced kay-lee) is a traditional Scottish or Irish social gathering that features a variety of performance, storytelling, and more - a lively, welcoming event that brings people together!

The evening features a curated showcase of short performances and stop-motion puppet films, including:

Zsophia Opra-Szabo (Edmonton, AB)
A selection of enchanting stop-motion animation films that explore migration through a poetic lens.

Cathy Stubbington (Enderby, BC)
Shadow puppetry highlighting the stories and struggles of migrant workers in Canada.

Nina Vogel (Brazil)
The World Within Us – a poignant and visually striking puppet performance on resilience and belonging.

Aya Mhana (Calgary, AB)
A Syrian-born singer, songwriter and oud player and now a proud Canadian citizen.

Ewa Sniatycka (Calgary, AB)
The Suitcase Show, a compelling puppet show recounting Ewa's memories of coming to Canada from Poland.

Jing Wo Lion Dance (Calgary, AB) - promoting Chinese culture through traditional Lion and Dragon dance performances.

After the performances, enjoy a delicious buffet dinner catered by Ethnicity – one of Calgary’s most beloved social enterprises. With humble roots in a church basement more than 20 years ago, Ethnicity began as a Collective Kitchen offering peer support to newcomer women. Today, it continues to empower and employ women from diverse cultural backgrounds while delighting guests with vibrant global cuisine.

Cap off the evening with live music and a mix and mingle — connect with artists, fellow attendees, and special guests in a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

Refunds: No refunds within 7 days of the event but a charitable receipt will be issued.
