About this workshop

How faithful should we be to the source text?

In real-life interpreting and translation practice, decisions are rarely straightforward. We are often expected to prioritise accuracy, yet audience needs, context, culture and purpose can all influence how a message is conveyed.

This interactive CPD session explores how communicative purpose shapes professional choices, drawing on ideas from Skopos Theory in a practical and accessible way.

We will consider questions such as:

• When might audience needs take priority over strict fidelity?
• Can the source text ever be reshaped to serve a clearer purpose?
• Where is the line between strategy and distortion?
• How do culture and context affect ethical choices?
• How do we justify our decisions professionally?

No prior theory knowledge is required. The focus is on applying ideas directly to everyday interpreting and translation practice.

By the end of this session, participants will have had the opportunity to critically reflect on and justify professional decisions in interpreting and translation practice.
