Event description
Pushout by Monique W. Morris is a compelling exploration of the systemic factors that contribute to the criminalization and pushout of Black girls in the American education system. Morris sheds light on the often-overlooked experiences of Black girls who face harsh disciplinary measures, racial and gender biases, and a lack of support in schools.
The book addresses the intersections of race, gender, and class, highlighting the unique challenges that Black girls encounter in their educational journeys. Morris argues that punitive disciplinary policies, coupled with stereotypes and societal expectations, contribute to a school-to-confinement pathway for many Black girls. The consequences of this pushout extend beyond the educational system, impacting the girls' lives and opportunities for the future.
Through a combination of research, personal narratives, and analysis, Morris advocates for a more inclusive and equitable approach to education that recognizes and addresses the specific needs and experiences of Black girls. "Pushout" serves as a call to action to reform educational policies and practices to create a more supportive and empowering environment for all students, particularly those who have been historically marginalized.
During each book club session, we will discuss the main points, quotes, and details we gleaned from the reading, build community, and expand our comprehension of the general topic. We will also connect to outside events and how they relate to the topic.
