Everything you've ever wanted to know about the NDIS appeals process

About the Event

As the NDIS continues to grow and evolve, people with disability may need to advocate to access the supports and funding they need for their lives. While there is a clear process for appealing NDIS decisions, many people find these processes confusing or intimidating — making it difficult to feel confident about lodging an appeal.

Queensland Advocacy for Inclusion has a legal team that supports people seeking to appeal NDIS decisions. However, as a small team, we are unable to meet the high demand for one-on-one assistance. To help bridge this gap, we are hosting this public online forum to provide accessible information and guidance, so you can better understand the appeals process and feel more confident navigating it.

Speakers

  • MC - Sara Martins, Systems Coordinator, QAI

  • Scene setter - Matilda Alexander, CEO, QAI

  • Panel Speakers

    • Andrea de Smidt, Senior Supervising Solicitor, NDIS Advocacy Practice, QAI

    • Sian Thomas, Legal Director of Programs, QAI

    • Tabatha Young, Mob4Mob board member representative and disability advocate at TASC National

Topics

  • What types of appeals exist?

    • Your application to access the NDIS was refused

    • Your plan does not include the support you need

    • You need a plan variation or reassessment

  • What are my rights to seek an appeal?

  • What is an internal review?

  • What is the Australian Review Tribunal (ART) and how does it work?

  • What can I expect the process to be?

  • What is a case conference? What is a conciliation?

  • Independent assessments during the appeal by an OT or medical professional (IME)

  • Where can I find resources and advice?

Who Should Attend

This forum is designed for:

  • People with disability who want to appeal an NDIS decision and are unsure what the process involves

  • People with disability who are already in the appeals process and would like more information and confidence

  • Disability advocates who want to strengthen their understanding of the appeals process

  • Support coordinators, service providers, family members, friends, teachers, government employees, and anyone who wants to better support people with disability

This session will be recorded and made it available at QAI's YouTube channel.

Tickets

This is a free event.

There is an option for people to contribute if they wish to. The demand for NDIS appeals is at a historical high, and advocacy organisations are not sufficiently funded to keep up with demand. We gratefully accept any contributions that will help us run more events like this and support more people in navigating NDIS appeals. You can choose your own adventure at checkout. Please review this carefully, as no contributions will be refunded.

Disclaimer

This event should not be treated as legal advice. The NDIS regularly changes, and the content discussed during this session is designed to help people better understand the NDIS appeals process. Please ask any questions throughout the session.
