At the fourth QPHCN event of 2023, we will hear from leaders in the disability sector discussing current services and programs, accessibility, inclusion, purpose, and the power of working in partnership. There will be presentations and discussions on accessibility, inclusion and workforce diversity.

Following the event, attendees will have the opportunity to network while enjoying light refreshments.

EVENT SPEAKERS

Dr Dinesh Palipana OAM - Doctor, lawyer, disability advocate and researcher

Dinesh was the first quadriplegic medical intern in Queensland and the second person to graduate medical school with quadriplegia in Australia. As a result of his injury and experiences, Dinesh has been an advocate for inclusion and is a founding member of Doctors with Disabilities Australia. Dinesh works in the emergency department at the Gold Coast University Hospital and is a senior lecturer at Griffith University and adjunct research fellow at the Menzies Health Institute of Queensland. Dinesh is the 2021 Queensland Australian of the Year.

Brent Phillips - Chief Impact Officer, Deaf Connect

Brent is currently Chief Impact Officer at Deaf Connect, a national social impact service provider for Deaf and hard of hearing Australians. Formerly, Brent has held leadership positions at the National Disability Insurance Agency and Victorian Disability Advisory Council. He is a former President of Deaf Sports Australia, as well as Co-Chair of the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission Disability Reference Group. Brent is a third-generation Deaf person in his family, married to a Deaf person, and is the proud father of two children.

Emma Lynam - Business Owner, Master Shredder

Emma Lynam, a vibrant businesswoman and entrepreneur. Emma’s business, Master Shredder is a confidential shredding service for sensitive documents. The businesses ethos, powered by possibility, not defined by disability, is a testament to Emma and her work.

In her spare time Emma enjoys modelling, travelling, going to the theatre and enjoying dinner with friends. Emma also just happens to have Down syndrome, Autism, was born deaf and also has a cleft palate. As a result she has little verbal communication, despite this Emma loves to share her story with people using her iPad and an app called Pictello.

Cody Skinner - Disability Advocate

Cody Skinner is a proud First Nations Australian man who courageously navigates life with multiple disabilities. He is a disability advocate and sole trader running of his business Link Connection One Community. Cody teaches deaf sign language Auslan in his business. Despite facing personal challenges, including being deaf, living with autism spectrum disorder, and navigating mental health issues, Cody's determination to improve the quality of life for individuals with disabilities is unwavering. He gave evidence at the Disability Royal Commission in 2020, opening up many opportunities. Cody teaches deaf sign language Auslan in his business.

Amanda Frier - Access for All Manager, CheckUP

CheckUP's Amanda Frier will also be discussing how you can increase your own disability awareness using our Access for All online training course. Developed for mainstream healthcare providers, Access for All aims to improve disability awareness and increase understanding of the barriers people living with disability experience when accessing health care. Mandy's background in nutrition and dietetics and lived experience of disability have seen her on the giving and receiving ends of healthcare. This parallel exposure to healthcare for people with disability has helped her understand the importance of disability awareness among health providers.
