Tommy Matisse, so named for The Who’s Rock Opera “Tommy” and the artist Henry Matisse is a Melbourne boy studying at the Royal Academy of Music in London. He’s a violinist and composer who hears music where no one else does, the noise of trains, the chirping of crickets, the dripping of downpipes. He rebels against the traditions of classical music in his search for a new form, and as far as the establishment is concerned slaughters opera on the way.
Returning to Melbourne after his younger sister’s Emma, fatal overdose he discovers her DJ mixes and follows that path in the world of dance and trance.
If you believed the critics on this film rather than listening to the viewers, then you missed a clever and unique moment in Australian contemporary youth oriented cinema. A hard genre to crack, left mostly to Hollywood, One perfect Day beautifully peels open a complex, not always perfectly told story, to light the screen up with a sensory explosion of music, mayhem and emotion. From the lows of family drama to the highs of club life and the dance scene, One Perfect Day weaves a wholly engrossing story with many great rave scenes all to a world-class dance music soundtrack; an Australian film bursting with ambition and fresh, extravagant ideas.
Bring the picnic blankets and hampers and head to The Quad for a great night of outdoor cinema in the heart of Lismore, 21- 23 May.
