Queen of the Corner - Wahine Surf Competition

This competition is aimed at getting ladies out in the waves regardless of surfing ability. The overall aim for this event is to support all abilities to feel safe and supported and to have fun in the water!

Tickets are limited to 40 entries, available via the Humanitix link above. Previous years were a sellout so don’t wait to enter if you're keen! (Note: one entry per order, so we know which competition category each falls under - more details on categories below)


On the day

Saturday 4th May @ Airport corner at Lyall Bay

Registrations open at 7:30am (on beach, in the corner)

Health & Safety / Event briefing at 8am

First heats starting 8:30am, and finals will be held after all heats

Prizegiving will be held at Parrotdog Bar at 5pm and will be announcing the winners/giving out spot prizes from 5:45pm

We will have a first aid kit and lifeguard at the event, and Parrotdog will have a tent on the beach with a few give aways too!

There will be prizes for 1st/2nd/3rd placings in each category, and also various prizes for sportsmanship etc, as well as some awesome spot prizes!

This event is weather dependent, with a postponed date for the following Saturday (11th May). We will update this page the day before the event and the morning of, at 7am to confirm if going ahead, depending on the weather and ocean conditions.

Beginners – Any board length

Open Longboard

Description of categories

Shortboard is classified as under 7-foot, longboard over 7-foot

Beginner surfer: Someone able to keep their balance on their surfboard, paddle, and catch some white-water waves (even if on tummy or knees). May be able to stand up on board, and ride the breaking wave toward the beach in the straight line.

Intermediate surfer: Someone who can stand comfortably, starting to ride the wave face or still be in the white water sometimes!

Open surfer: Someone who can surf a green wave and might have some turns or moves.

*Minimum age of entry = 14 years

*No stand-up paddle boards or boogie boards – foamies are fine (encouraged!)


What to bring

Surfboard and wetsuit

Sunblock/hats/sun protection

Towel

Warm clothing

Water and snacks

Great fucking attitude

*Unfortunately, we will not be providing refunds if the event does not go ahead, and all funds from tickets are going towards the Gurfer’s group for activities throughout the year/costs for this event. So follow our FB group "Gurfers in Wellington" to stay in touch with what's on!
