Introduction to Harm Reduction
Description
An Introduction to Harm Reduction
QNADA is proud to present this full day pre conference workshop for QNADA members.
This training session, facilitated by QuIVAA, equips healthcare workers with practical knowledge and skills to support individuals who use substances through a harm reduction lens. Participants will explore core harm reduction principles and gain an overview of major drug categories, including their general effects, associated risks, and evidence-based strategies to reduce harm.
Participants will develop confidence in recognising and responding to overdoses across different drug classes, including stimulants, depressants, and dissociatives.
In addition, the training addresses the impact of stigma and discrimination on healthcare access and outcomes, encouraging more inclusive, person-centered care. A dedicated segment on Performance and Image Enhancing Drugs (PIEDs), delivered with Sonya (Steroid Peer Worker), provides targeted insights into this specific area of substance use.
This workshop is facilitated by Brooke Walters and Sonya Weith from QuIVAA.
Brooke Walters is the Coordinator for Hi-Ground, a project of QuIVAA. She is a qualified social worker, harm reduction educator, art therapist, events coordinator, and peer practitioner. Brooke brings over 15 years of experience in the music events and festival industry, including a decade leading harm reduction and peer support services across Queensland.
She is passionate about developing innovative approaches to harm reduction education and support, with a focus on creating programs that are engaging, accessible, and responsive to diverse communities.
Sonya Weith is the Steroid PeerQnect worker for QuIVAA and brings a wealth of knowledge of lived and professional experience to this niche but rapidly emerging area.
