Queensland votes, but what’s on voters’ minds?
Event description
Four years from Annastacia Palaszczuk’s last big electoral victory, we’re heading back to the polls again to choose our leaders for another term of parliament.
Polls have the Liberal National opposition in front — but that prediction disguises some of the nuances of political feeling in this big state. So what do we know about what Queenslanders are thinking about when they think about politics? What can we learn from listening to political conversations online? How much are politicians listening — and how are they hoping to win over the electorate this time around?
Hacks/Hackers Brisbane hosts an expert panel featuring QUT researcher Samantha Vilkins, 4ZZZ journalist Alexis Pink and DemosAU director George Hasanakos, moderated by Brisbane Times digital editor Rosie Ryan.
About the panellists
Samantha Vilkins is a postdoctoral research associate at QUT's Digital Media Research Centre. Her research looks at how evidence and expertise are distributed and discussed online, especially their role in the dynamics of political polarisation.
Alexis Pink is the news coordinator and state political reporter at 4ZZZ. They have covered six years of state and local politics in Brisbane and have led the reporting and election night broadcasts for the 2016 and 2020 Queensland elections and the 2019 and 2022 Australian elections for the station.
George Hasanakos is a former political advisor, now director of research at DemosAU, with expertise in political and polling analysis and a background in law and economics.
