    Event description

Presented by the Architects with PRIDE collective, Queer Space brings together the newly appointed CEO of the Australian Institute of Architects, Cameron Bruhn and RMIT professor and architecture critic, Naomi Stead to discuss the intersectionality of queer space in architecture and Naomi's forthcoming book; Queering Architecture: Methods, Practices, Spaces, Pedagogies.

    Naomi Stead

Naomi Stead is a Professor in the School of Architecture and Urban Design at RMIT University, Melbourne, where she is also Director of the Design and Creative Practice Enabling Capability Platform – working with researchers across the creative fields to engage in high-impact interdisciplinary research with social and environmental benefit. Over a career of twenty years, she has been committed to research-based advocacy - into gender equity and work-related wellbeing in architectural workplaces, and ways in which creative practice and education can respond to the climate and biodiversity crisis. Stead has edited or co-edited six books, including the award-winning After the Australian Ugliness (NGV & Thames and Hudson, 2020); and the forthcoming Queering Architecture: Methods, Spaces, Practices, and Pedagogies (Bloomsbury, London, 2023). Stead is widely published as a critic and commentator – most recently as architecture critic for The Saturday Paper.

    Cameron Bruhn

Cameron Bruhn is currently the Dean and Head of School at The University of Queensland’s School of Architecture. He is a writer, editor, curator and researcher for architecture and design and an advocate for the value of the built environment in shaping communities, cities and regions. He was previously the editorial director of Architecture Media, where his role included the custodianship of the centenarian magazine Architecture Australia. Cameron is a Fellow of the Design Institute of Australia and an Honorary Fellow of the Australian Institute of Architects. In early April 2023 Cameron will leave UQ to become the new CEO of the Australian Institute of Architects.

Queer Space will take place on Gadigal Land. Always was, always will be.
