Driving transport electrification in Australia: Trends, threats, and opportunities for sustainable transport

Australia’s transport sector contributes almost 20% of Australia’s CO2 emissions. The shift to electric vehicles (EVs) is integral to reducing global warming impacts in line with The Paris Agreement by 2030. The EV transition is gathering pace in Australia and is expected to dominate the transport and electricity sectors over the coming decades.

In this presentation, CSIRO’s Transport Electrification Team Leader Kate Cavanagh and QUT’s PhD Candidate / CSIRO Postgraduate Student Emma Joenpolvi will share their insights on the trends impacting EV adoption in Australia. They will discuss the challenges of these new technologies and the impact of consumer behaviour on transport electrification.

Ms Kate Cavanagh, CSIRO, Transport Electrification Team Leader

Kate Cavanagh is a Research Engineer working in the CSIRO Energy Systems Program. Kate is Team Leader Transport Electrification leading research for analyses of data and physical integration to the grid to provide insights for uptake, barriers and opportunities for electric vehicles in Australia. Kate is passionate to address the challenges in the Australian energy sector to navigate its transformation to a clean energy future economy.

Ms Emma Joenpolvi, QUT: PhD Candidate / CSIRO: Postgraduate Student
Emma Joenpolvi is a PhD Candidate at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) and a Postgraduate Student at CSIRO. Emma holds a Master of Philosophy (Marketing). Her previous research has been published in Tourism and Hospitality Research. Her research interests include sustainable consumer behaviour, electric vehicle consumer behaviour, and brand communication utilising big data and natural language processing methods.
