Racism & (Dis)abilities on Campus
Event description
Hosted by Lena Karmel Lodge this tenth session of Fighting Racism & Bigotry is dedicated to Racism & Disabilities. It will feature a panel of speakers from across the university, including academics, professional staff, and undergraduate and postgraduate students in conversation with Dr Lina Koleilat (Law, CASS).
Disability and race intersect to perpetuate the oppression and exclusion of people of color with disabilities. Disability has been used to create and perpetuate racism, as well as to justify discrimination against other marginalized groups, and institutional racism has contributed to the creation of disability in communities of color. From the creation of indigenous and black-specific diseases during colonialism, and the use of disability to justify forced institutionalization or even expulsion. Understand the intersection of racism and ableism to address both systems of oppression effectively.
