By popular demand, RANDOM INTERNATIONAL’S RAIN ROOM IS RETURNING FOR ITS THIRD SEASON at the Jackalope Pavilion in St Kilda
Following a sell-out season in 2021, Random International’s unmissable Rain Room is reopening for its third season.
An international art sensation, Rain Room is a 100 square metre expanse of continuous rainfall. Allowing visitors to take centre stage in a mesmerising merging of art, technology, and nature, this downpour somewhat magically responds to your presence and movement, resulting in an experience of being consumed by an intense rainstorm, all the while being completely protected from its forces.
Rain Room is Melbourne’s most talked about – and Instagrammed – solo art exhibition of recent memory, allowing visitors to “control the weather”.
Rain Room has previously exhibited at The Barbican, London (2012); the Museum of Modern Art, New York (2013); the YUZ Foundation, Shanghai (2015); the LACMA, Los Angeles (2017); the Sharjah Art Foundation (2017); and at the Museum of Contemporary Art Busan (2019) and Jackalope Pavilion St Kilda is the only place you can experience it in the Southern Hemisphere.
This season, Rainmakers can enhance their experience with the return of Black Star Pastry’s Rain Cake, exclusive to their St Kilda store, located directly below Rain Room.
About Jackalope Art Collection
The Jackalope Art Collection was founded in 2016 by Louis Li, ahead of the group’s debut hotel opening on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula. With a background in filmmaking, Li drives the collection’s curatorial concept - to present rebellious pieces as a conceptual layer in storytelling. Often immersive, these pieces are used to create transformative experiences in hospitality, taking guests on a journey through an ever-evolving world of emotions and expressions.
The Jackalope Art Collection found on property at Jackalope Hotel Mornington Peninsula, currently comprises international works by Olafur Eliasson, Tracey Emin and Alicja Kwade, alongside local commissions by Emily Floyd, Del Kathryn Barton and Andrew Hazewinkel.
About Jackalope Pavilion
Designed by March Studio, the award-winning purpose-built Jackalope Pavilion is situated above the Prince of Wales car park in St Kilda. The pavilion is designed entirely around the Rain Room. Celebrating the transient nature of the Rain Room work – constructed from standard tube and fitting scaffolding, and off-the-shelf panels, the pavilion is designed to be movable and reusable.
The Jackalope Pavilion has further advanced St Kilda’s vibrancy and cultural dynamic and introduced a new demographic to one of Melbourne’s most storied suburbs. The decision to bring Rain Room to Australia supported a key part of Jackalope’s undertaking to bring internationally significant art to Australia. Jackalope Pavilion was awarded the 2021 National Architecture Award by the Australian Institute of Architects.
About RANDOM INTERNATIONAL
Art Group Random International run a collaborative studio for experimental practice within contemporary art. Founded in 2005 by Hannes Koch and Florian Ortkrass, today they work with larger teams of diverse and complementary talent out of studios in London and Berlin.
Questioning aspects of identity and autonomy in the post-digital age, the group’s work invites active participation. Random International explores the human condition in an increasingly mechanised world through emotional yet physically intense experiences. The artists aim to prototype possible behavioural environments by experimenting with different notions of consciousness, perception, and instinct.
Rain Room can be seen as an amplified representation of our environment. Human presence prevents the rain from falling, creating a unique atmosphere and exploring how humans relate to each other and to nature are increasingly mediated through technology.
