    What We'll Do

We’ll start at 2.00 pm with a welcome and introduction. This practical Workshop will start with a presentation inside and then we'll move outside to plant seeds in punnets to take home.

    What We'll See and Learn

Raising Seedlings from Seed - presented by Ilka Seibel

Ilka is a backyard gardener who has been raising all her seedlings from seed.  She'll share tips that work well for her.

    We'll learn about:

    • Why Ilka raises seeds and doesn't buy seedlings
    • Why to raise seeds in punnets and don’t directly plant into the garden
    • Benefits of collecting seeds from your garden
    • Making seed raising mix (Ilka's home recipe)
    • Different options for choosing punnets
    • Where to keep trays of seedlings and how to water them
    • What to do when they are ready to be planted out

Then we'll move outside for a hands-on activity.

    Workshop details

    • Prepare seed raising mix
    • How to treat the soil when putting into punnets
    • Watering in

Attendees will have the opportunity to pot some seeds to take home.

Please bring any empty seedlings punnets you have at home.

    About Ilka Seibel

Ilka has previously always tried to grow some veggies at home, but was very rarely successful.

She started her Cert III in Horticulture July 2023, and she and David completed a PDC course in September 2023. This opend up a can of worms and they have changed their whole backyard since then.

Ilka has taken part in a couple of Syntropic workshops and would love to create something in this direction on a bigger scale, like on acreage.

Through the permaculture influence she has learned that soil is the most important part of growing plants. This did not even get a big mention in her Cert III in Horticulture.

    Afternoon Tea (provided)

A light afternoon tea will be provided (including Gluten Free and Vegan options).
