Duration: 2 hours 30 minutes

Join master ceramicist Gary Hambleton for an immersive Raku firing workshop in the charming surrounds of the Old Stables Pottery Studio. With over 40 years of experience, Gary’s passion for pottery is infectious. During his years in Perth, he was a part of the Hyde Park Festival, where he introduced countless visitors to the magic of Raku alongside friends and fellow artists.
What is Raku?
Raku is a dramatic, fast-fired ceramics technique with origins in Japan. The process combines fire, smoke and spontaneity to produce one-of-a-kind surfaces — no two pieces are ever alike. It’s a lively and interactive way to engage with pottery.
What you’ll do:
Choose from Gary’s hand-thrown bottles or vases, made from a special clay and fine sand blend.
Learn about resist techniques and apply your own glaze designs.
Witness your piece fired to over 1000°C in the Raku kiln.
Experience the thrilling moment as your glowing pot is lifted with tongs and placed into a reduction chamber (metal drum filled with combustible materials) — creating the signature crackles and metallic effects.
Walk away with a completely unique vessel to treasure.
What’s included:
1 handcrafted pottery piece (choice of form)
Use of glazes and all materials
Full Raku firing experience
Tea, coffee and light refreshments
