Re:Gen AI #2 opens with three short AI workshops, followed by a cross-party panel on AI deepfakes and the election. Representatives of the Labour Party, the Green Party of Aotearoa, Te Pāti Māori and The Opportunity Party will answer questions from the audience, just 3 weeks before the general election on 7 November.
A deepfake is a fake video, photo or voice recording made with AI so that it looks and sounds real. Deepfakes can now be made at low cost and are difficult to detect. They are used to mislead voters, to sell products, and to scam people by imitating someone they trust. New Zealand electoral law does not currently require AI-generated campaign material to be disclosed.
On 17 October, we will put the issue of AI deepfakes to the parties directly.
This event is open to all ages. Students, working people, parents, teachers, business owners, politicians and academic. You know AI or not, it does not matter as long as you are curious.

How the panel works
When you register, you are invited to submit a question about the social impact of AI deepfakes for the panel.
Questions will be grouped by theme, and the final set will be shared with every panellist in advance. Questions close at 5pm on Tuesday 13 October.
