Event description

This practical online workshop with Sharon and Phil Callen is for motivated Years 2-6 teachers and leaders of literacy who want 'hands on' ways to enrich the teaching of information writing through the Reading Like a Writer framework.
Participants will actually see how teaching strategies can be expertly used with all the tools and techniques you need to succeed.
Learn how to powerfully use quality children’s literature and a workshop model, and develop students as self-motivated, self-directed and self-regulated writers.

Teacher comments from the last webinar - High Frequency Words F-2:

  • "This was fantastic! So appreciate your time and knowledge"
  • "Thanks so much for your generous time and expertise"
  • "Just a huge thank you for this afternoon - It was wonderful!"
WHY?
  • As teachers we can struggle with helping young writers to develop their knowledge and expertise of the writing process through meaningful writing
  • We want to do less 'one off' activities that do little to empower them
  • We struggle to differentiate for our young writers so that they all have an entry point for their writing
  • We need someone more expert to guide us in the best approaches and resources possible
  • We often don't have high quality literature on hand for students to be inspired by, and from which they can develop their own writing
  • We find it hard to use the curriculum in effective ways that connect with our students
HOW?

This practical workshop addresses the struggles we have by:

  • Sharon introducing you to the Reading Like a Writer framework, a framework which enables writers to be active in noticing, exploring and understanding how good writers write
  • Also expertly showing effective ways of accessing and using quality children's literature as outstanding models for students' writing
  • Sharon going through the process as if you were a student in her class, so that you can actually experience what it is, and thereby consider how you can implement and adjust it
  • Also taking you through the practicalities: how to get started, how to fit it all in, how to keep track of learning
  • Showing how to use Quick Writes in new powerful ways
  • Showing how to cover the curriculum in easy to understand ways
  • Showing how the Reading Like a Writer framework supports writers across all aspects of writing for all text types, across ages
