Event description

Presented by Jillian Robinson in partnership with Teach like a Champion, this in-person series of two full day workshops brings the most current advice from the Teach Like A Champion team with a focus on Reading Reconsidered. With many schools embedding strong practices in the early years with teaching phonics, these sessions will open up the whole of Scarborough’s reading rope with practical classroom ready techniques to begin building a culture of reading based on the science. We will build both knowledge and skill throughout the day. All material is considered in the light of the Queensland Department of Education’s Position Statement on Reading.

Day One

  • Ways of Reading—Our starting point with the body of knowledge known as the Science of Reading; How to maximise the amount of reading students do and how to balance the use of shared oral and silent reading to create joyful cultures of reading and belonging
  • Knowledge Building and Tools—How to build background knowledge in literacy classes and leverage it to support comprehension and analysis
  • Vocabulary—How to effectively teach new vocabulary and reinforce vocabulary acquisition during reading

Day Two

  • Writing for Reading—How to leverage the synergies between three types of academic writing to prepare students to be excellent writers as well as readers
  • Close Reading and Text Complexity - How to support students in establishing and analysing meaning in texts that are sufficiently rigorous and complex
