The Gweagal spears, taken from the Gweagal people at Kamay (Botany Bay) during Captain Cook’s arrival in 1770, were returned in 2024 to the La Perouse Aboriginal Community after more than 250 years in the United Kingdom. Today Noeleen Timbery will reflect on the significance of this return and its meaning for cultural heritage and reconciliation.

Elley holds qualifications in Social Work and a Master of Indigenous Business Leadership, and brings deep, longstanding connections with Community and First Nations leaders that ground her values-driven leadership.
David Roberts
A Bundjalung man born and raised in Sydney, David Roberts is Director Innovation and Training at the Aboriginal Health & Medical Research Council of NSW. He directs the organisation’s Registered Training Organisation and the broader training portfolio supporting First Nations health and community services. David oversees strategy, curriculum design, compliance and delivery across a wide suite of qualifications and skill sets, spanning primary and public health, leadership, community development and pre-employment pathways.

Michael Rose AM - Co Chair of Reconciliation Australia
Michael Rose is an independent director whose work spans several key sectors in Sydney. He is the Chancellor of UTS, Chair the Committee for Sydney, President of the Art Gallery of NSW, Chair of Greater Sydney Parklands and the Westmead Institute for Medical Research. Over the last 20 years Michael has been actively engaged in policy issues involving First Nations communities and indigenous rights, employment, education and reconciliation. In 2016 he served as a member of the Referendum Council on Constitutional Recognition.
Noeleen Timbery - Chairperson La Perouse Local Aboriginal Land Council
Keynote speaker - Noeleen Timbery proudly belongs to one of the most recognisable families in the La Perouse community. She is also the current Chairperson of the La Perouse Local Aboriginal Land Council. Like many families in La Perouse, the Timbery family have a long traditional and cultural connection to La Perouse, coastal Sydney, and the Illawarra and South Coast areas of NSW. Noeleen uses her leadership role in the La Perouse community to advocate for self-determination, empowerment and prosperity for her community, which is built on strength in culture and unity. Professionally, Noeleen works on developing and managing programs that are aimed to provide improved outcomes for Aboriginal children and families throughout Sydney.
