This training will equip AOD staff with the knowledge and skills to have confident conversations with service users about reducing harms from smoking or vaping (including stopping, if that's their goal).

Please note, this training session will have a special focus on supporting AOD workers who work with women, exploring how workers can assist this cohort of service users in managing harms related to their nicotine use.

We’ll discuss how quit attempts can complement the goals that service users are working towards, and how support can be personalised to each individual you work with.

About the training

The training is specifically tailored for workers in alcohol, tobacco and other drug services, and any workers in these services are eligible to do the training.

Through this training, you will:

improve your understanding of the risks and harms from smoking and vaping
improve your understanding of the impacts of smoking and vaping on different AOD treatment outcomes, and interactions with different drugs and medications
gain skills to embed smoking and vaping screening and assessment into routine care, including assessing smoking and vaping status, and levels of nicotine dependence
improve your skills and confidence to provide brief interventions specifically for smoking and vaping, and to improve your provision of personalised support to service users
get tips on supporting AOD service users to overcome barriers to quitting
improve your knowledge of providing nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) to service users, including the types of NRT, how each is used, medication interactions, and step-down approaches
improve your knowledge of where to refer service users for additional smoking and vaping cessation and harm reduction support

ATODA is pleased to be partnering with the Cancer Council ACT. Experienced trainers will be delivering the session in an interactive format, including discussion and case studies. A certificate of participation will be provided following the training.

Training details

The training is delivered in-person for a duration of 3.5 hours. There is also a 1-hour online learning module that participants will complete before attending the in-person training.

Training will be provided at Toora Women's office at Weston Community Hub, Hilder Street, Weston Creek ACT 2611, Parking is free.

Light refreshments including tea and coffee will be provided.

This training is part of the Reducing Nicotine Harms Project led by ATODA for the AOD sector and funded by an ACT Government Healthy Canberra Grant.
