The continuing algal bloom along the South Australian coastline is having a devastating impact on our unique, local marine life and community. As the situation continues, Citizen Science Programs are playing a vital role in tracking the spread and impact of the algal bloom and assisting scientists in trying to understand this phenomenon.

These Programs such as our Reef Watch SA Reef Rambles, offer an opportunity to get involved as a community member to help provide insights and contribute to the understanding, effective management and conservation of marine ecosystems such as our Great Southern Reef.

Are you interested to volunteer with Reef Watch SA for future Reef Rambles across Greater Adelaide?

Join us for a Reef Watch SA Volunteer Training Day.

This training session will include:

- an “Introduction to Rocky Seashores” PowerPoint presentation: introducing you to the Great Southern Reef (what it is and why it is important); and teaching you some basic rocky seashore terminology and species identification;

- short skill-building course on using iNaturalist including account set up, how to join a project and, how to upload species observations into the platform;

- briefing on other current marine community programs including how you can become involved and what action you can take;
- a Reef Ramble at Kingston Park.

Upon completion of the training session and completion of our volunteer forms, you will be ready to Volunteer with us on future Reef Rambles happening across Greater Adelaide annually.

Training session duration: total 2.5hrs.

Meet: 11am at the Seacliff Surf Life Saving Club for a prompt 11:15am start.

We are acutely aware of the algal bloom and its effect on our South Australian coastline and community. We are following the recommended State and Federal Government's advice and will assessing daily conditions through Surf Life Saving SA's Beachsafe app and companion website Beachsafe.org.au.
During the Reef Ramble, we may come across deceased marine life and sea foam. Please consider your wellbeing and physical health and register only if you feel comfortable doing so.
We won't be providing an update on the current harmful algal bloom. For the latest information on the algal bloom to help you stay informed, stay safe, and understand how the situation is being managed, as well as resources and community projects that you can become involved in – please visit the Conservation SA Harmful Algal Bloom webpage.

General Information:

You must be over 18 years of age to participate in the Training Days. For more information, please email reefwatch@conservationsa.org.au
Please arrive on time.
Please be sun-safe.
Please wear enclosed footwear (e.g. sneakers, walking shoes, reef shoes, dive/snorkel boots).
Accessibility: there are stairs between the reef and carpark. The reef surface is uneven so please be mindful of trips and slips. This area is not accessible for walkers or wheelchairs.
No swimming or snorkeling required - water is less than ankle deep.

Post-registration and for on the day - please bring:

Any personal protective and/or allergy medications you may require (given the algal bloom)
Notebook and pen
Sunscreen & hat!
A full water bottle
Snacks
Appropriate footwear (enclosed shoes) and clothing (we recommend long sleeves).

State and Federal Government community health advice as a result of the algal bloom changes.
Monitored beach conditions via the Beachsafe app are deemed unsuitable.
Weather is above 36 degrees Celsius.
Moderate-heavy rain is forecast.
