Event description

Come celebrate the launch of Oxford's Refaat Alareer Community Library at our new home inside The Nest!

Tickets are free, with optional donations going to Bridge of Solidarity, an anti-capitalist mutual aid organisation in Gaza, and Students for Palestine's Gaza Fundraiser. There will be tickets available on the door, but please register in advance so that we can have an idea of the numbers!

What to expect:

  • Open mic: bring poetry or prose, whether written by yourself or something you've read, that inspires you to fight for a better world.

  • Crafts and letter-writing: get creative with blackout poetry and write to UK political prisoners.

  • Browse our growing collection of non-fiction, fiction, and poetry books and zines about Palestine, social justice, and liberation.

  • The Nest's bar will be open, and alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages will be available to purchase!

What is the Refaat Alareer Community Library? Our library grew out of the 2024 Palestine solidarity encampments at the university of oxford, which called on the university to divest from israeli apartheid, occupation and genocide. The encampments were also vital spaces for political education, enabled in no small part by our library tent, which was stocked with donations from camp and community members. The library tent, like our present library, was named in honour of Dr Refaat Alareer, the Palestinian poet, professor and activist who was martyred by israel on 6th December 2023.

If you can't make it, but would still like to donate, you may do so via the 'Register and donate' button on this page.
