Reflective Noise w/ Julia Beiers & Beetle Miyela

Join us for a night of reflective noise in response to, and amongst the sanctuary of Kuweni Dias Mendis' new exhibition, Running Rivers: People of Place. Guiding a generative, meditative and expansive journey through sound, two artists of deep aural sensitivities in collaboration for the first time ~ Julia Beiers and Beetle Miyela. 

This will be an intimate, introspective shared space, please arrive on time, as we will be closing the main doors at 6:30pm when the performances start (exit through the Brunswick St entrance). Entry by donation, with all proceeds going directly towards the sound artists.

Running Rivers: People of Place

Guided by the Sri Lankan principles of ‘ප්‍රකෘති Prakuratha’ (original creation or nature) and ‘සංස්කෘත Sanskrutha’ (culture), Running Rivers: People of Place echoes the Indigenous knowledges that remain in deep relation to the environment. Here on Turrbal and Yuggera Country, the river is a vital conduit, connecting each to the land, and to each other.

This multi-sensory installation utilises the river as a symbol to explore the feminine expressions of the Sri Lankan 64 Mayam, embodying spirituality as a journey and destination. Marked by local river mud, clay, insect pigments and rhythm, Dias Mendis reconciles cultural boundaries amongst diasporic complexity.

Kuweni Dias Mendis is a multidisciplinary artist, born in Sri Lanka and has been based in australia since 1999. Her practice reflects on place, culture and identity through the lens of diasporic experience, working across raw mark making, Yantra (symbolic drawing from ritual art in Sri Lanka), installation, performance and film.

Julia Beiers is a musician based in Magandjin/Brisbane making vibrations in the underground jazz/improvisation/dance music scenes. She lovingly shares her expressive and intentional musical voice to connect us all with the universal language of music.

Beetle Miyela is a multidisciplinary sound and performance artist currently based in Magandjin, Brisbane. Her practice draws from her cultural heritage, descending from Anglo-Celtic, Scandinavian and Maltese bloodlines, whilst simultaneously connecting to the innate oneness of Mother Earth. Her aim is to use ritualistic, somatic performance as an offering to bridge the imaginary and the reality. Miyela's work focuses on creating places of quiet in order to explore the healing forces of sound and movement. She offers safe, immersive and creative spaces for audiences to rest and reconnect with themselves.
