Nearly three decades after Reformasi, Indonesia's democratic and civic space is facing renewed pressure. Military personnel have assumed wider roles in civilian affairs, raising concerns about the boundaries between civilian administration and security institutions. Civil society organisations have also documented intimidation, disinformation, criminalisation, and violence affecting journalists, activists, protesters, and human rights defenders. From the militarisation of indigenous territories to deepening forest fires and climate crisis in Kalimantan, the weakening of civilian oversight is leaving lasting consequences on people and planet alike.
This session brings together an academic reading of resurgent authoritarianism from Ariel Heryanto (Emeritus Professor, Monash University), a human rights perspective grounded in casework from Fatia Maulidiyanti (Human Rights Activist, ex-Coordinator KontraS), and a journalist's firsthand account from Fransisca Christy Rosana (Tempo, host of Bocor Alus Politik), moderated by Ika Krismantari (PhD Candidate, Monash University, former senior editor, The Conversation Indonesia).

Ariel Heryanto — Discussant
Emeritus Professor, Monash University. A leading scholar of Indonesian cultural politics and collective memory, he will examine the resurgence of New Order-style governance and the broader shrinking of civic space, situating today's military resurgence within longer patterns of authoritarian adaptation.
Fatia Maulidiyanti — Discussant
Human Rights Activist, Ex Coordinator KontraS (Commission for the Disappeared and Victims of Violence). Drawing on frontline advocacy work, she will address the return and expansion of militarism in Indonesian public life, from territorial military structures to the armed forces' growing footprint in civilian administration.
Fransisca Christy Rosana — Discussant
Journalist, Tempo, and host of the political podcast Bocor Alus Politik. She will discuss the state of Indonesian democracy and journalism today, drawing on her own experience as a target of intimidation for her political reporting, offering a firsthand account of the pressures facing the press.
Ika Krismantari — Moderator
PhD Candidate, Monash University, and former senior editor at The Conversation Indonesia.
