Regenerative Farming on Hill Country-Discussion Day
Event description
Kindly Hosted by Mark & Laura Koopmans in conjunction with the newly formed Canterbury Grazing Group with support from Quorum Sense and MPI.
Mark & Laura look forward to welcoming you to Hawkhills Farm near Kaikoura for an interactive and informative day of learning and sharing their experiences on a large hill country sheep & beef property.
Discussion topics for the day will include:
- Mob grazing on hill country-sheep & cattle
- Implementing regen principles on steep hill country
- Deferred grazing, managing pastures in a regen way and how to ensure quality in long rotations
- Drought resilience
- Soil health-how to improve it, soil moisture etc
- Reducing inputs-what are the alternatives?
- Feeding ewes coming into lamb/flushing.
- Sheep milk dairy-a look at their new venture.
Field day participants are invited to bring along their own lunch and arrive at the woolshed on the farm at 10:30.
Following lunch Mark & Laura will open the day with a chat about their own journey to where they are today and the formation of the new grazing group in Canterbury.
After the initial discussion at the woolshed attendees will be guided to various stops around the farm to observe and discuss in further detail the regenerative practices that they are using.
Mark & Laura are passionate about creating opportunities on their farm for future generations, they want to protect and enhance the native bush and the environment whilst also meeting stock performance targets, maintaining a profitable business and ensuring the availability of adequate feed at key times. They are open about their struggles and improvements that they see are still needed and welcome sincere and honest interaction and feedback from those attending the field day, this is as much an opportunity for them to learn from others as it is for others to learn from them.
The field day will finish up around 3pm with a cuppa back at the woolshed and a chance for further discussion.
Hawkhills Farm is situated approx. 30mins from Kaikoura along the Inland Kaikoura Rd. Exact address will be provided prior to event.
Following the Field Day Quorum Sense are hosting a film night at Rangiora High School bringing 'Six Inches of Soil' to NZ, a UK grassroots documentary that tells the inspiring story of three young British farmers transforming the way they produce food.
