Regional Community Workday @ Sweet Freedom Farm
Description
July’s Regional Community Workday is at SWEET FREEDOM FARM. Sweet Freedom Farm is a Black-led farm that grows culturally relevant, nutrient dense foods for communities impacted by food apartheid and the prison industrial complex. Join us in Germantown, NY to lend a hand in their fields and learn more about their distribution networks. Meet our farm teams, connect with the land, and learn more about our farming practices through hands-on activities for all experience levels. Lunch provided!

About Regional Community Workdays:
Every year we invite our community to join us on the farm, meet our farm team, connect with the land, and learn more about our farming practices through hands-on activities for all experience levels. This year while the farm is under construction we are sharing the love and support with other farms in our local ecosystem. We invite you to join our farmers in traveling to the host farms to volunteer, experience an educational tour, and share a catered meal together.
Access Notes:
COVID-19 Safety: Please stay home if you feel sick, suspect you have been exposed to COVID-19 within the past week, are recovering from COVID-19 and/or live/share indoor space with someone who currently has COVID-19 in order to minimize spread. Masks are optional outdoors, but required in all indoor space. Please bring your own mask (ideally N95 masks, we will have a limited amount available). We will have hand washing stations and hand sanitizer available.
WAIVER: Please fill out this waiver BEFORE arriving to the farm. This will help us have a quick and easy sign in process.
We will be starting promptly. Please come on time or plan to arrive a few minutes early.
PARKING: Parking is limited at Sweet Freedom Farm. We highly recommend you carpool to the farm. The entrance to the farm will be marked by a sign on the main road.
TERRAIN: The land on the farm is uneven and can be muddy depending on recent weather. We recommend sturdy shoes like work boots to make walking more comfortable. The farm is not currently wheelchair or mobility aid accessible.
WEATHER: Please check and dress for the weather. Depending on the day, this might mean a light jacket, boots, sun hat, sunscreen, etc. We recommend you wear comfortable clothes that can get dirty and closed-toed, waterproof shoes (no sandals or flip flops)
TICKS! We do have ticks in some areas on the farm. We encourage you to do a tick check when you get home. Some other preventative measures include: wearing light colored clothing, long sleeves and pants, or socks over pants.
TOILETS: We have one single-stall port-a-potty. Handwashing stations are located next to the toilet. All visitors and crew must wash hands before returning to participate.
ANIMALS: For the safety of our farm team and other attendees, please leave your furry animal companions (pets) at home. However, we do welcome Emotional Support and Service Animals. Please email to let us know if you plan to bring a service animal with yous.

FAQs
- What should I bring to the Community Workday?
We recommend you bring:
Clothes you are comfortable working in and getting dirty (layering is very helpful since it is chilly in the mornings and then really hot mid day); Make sure to check the weather to see if you'll need any additional clothing to be comfortable
Work boots (hiking boots or anything with good ankle support; you must wear closed toe shoes on the farm)
Sunscreen, bug spray + tick repellent
Sun hat, scarf or bandana for shade and sweat
garden gloves
water bottle
Backpack or tote bag to hold your personal belongings
Optional (but encouraged!)
Knee pads (this is very helpful if you have a knee injury or prone to knee pain)
N95 masks
Tupperware or containers for taking home leftovers from lunch
- Do I need to bring my own food?
Lunch is provided for our community workdays. The catered lunch will be vegan and vegetarian friendly meal catered by a local restaurant in the area. If you have additional dietary needs, you may reach out to us at programs@rocksteadyfarm.com.
If desired, you are welcome to bring your own snacks and food, however, we are not able to store or refrigerate anything for you.
- How difficult are workday tasks?
We plan hands-on activities for all experience levels at our community workdays. You are always welcome to opt-out of an activity or take breaks at any point during the day.
