Description
Join us in Darwin for Regions Rising NT, where we will be discussing Regions in Transition with a focus on the experiences of Place-Based Transition Packages (PBTPs).
Today, many regions are vulnerable to large-scale changes brought about by shifts in global demands – particularly in the resources sector – and by the impacts of automation in sectors that have historically been reliant on labour.
This presents a challenge for governments and for regions as there is no agreement about how best to manage them.
In Australia, PBTPs have a common way that governments assist regions, with over 100 such interventions across state and Commonwealth jurisdictions in the last twenty years.
PBTPs are agile, discrete interventions, designed to help a specific place or community see through a sudden shock such as the withdrawal or the downsizing of a major employer. Usually, these packages aim to create employment for displaced workers and to diversify a region’s economic base to make it less vulnerable to shifts in a single sector.
