Rangeland Rehydration Grader Field Day
Description
The Southern Rangelands Revitalisation Program (SRRP) supports pastoralists to investigate and design long-term solutions for on-station improvements in rangeland condition, land productivity and livestock management in WA's southern rangelands.
Ray Thompson is an Australian rangeland rehabilitation specialist who has spent more than four decades developing and promoting practical techniques to restore degraded semi-arid landscapes. Thompson became widely known for refining the techniques of waterponding and waterspreading, which are designed to capture rainfall and runoff, improve water infiltration, and reverse the decline of bare, eroded rangelands.
Join Ray and the Southern Rangeland Revisitation Team and other pastoralists for this interesting and practical day.
9:00 am - 9:30 am - Arrival, sign in, tea and coffee
9:30 am - 12:00 pm - Cue Community Resource Centre (lunch provided)
A frank and detailed presentation on the theory and limitations of waterponding and spreading. Lessons learnt from the 1950s through to present day on all aspects of design, construction and management.
12:30 - 4:30 pm - Austin Downs Station site (15km from Cue)
Following lunch, Ray will demonstrate the survey and construction of grader water ponding and water spreading banks.
This is an opportunity for collaborative discussion with other pastoralists.
